Akasol starts battery production at new plant in Darmstadt

Battery system manufacturer Akasol has officially commissioned their first ‘Gigafactory 1’ at its headquarters in Darmstadt, Germany. The production lines currently offer a production capacity of one gigawatt-hour. However, expansion to adjacent areas is already planned with up to 5 GWh per year. This is enough for 10,000 electric buses and trucks. At the opening ceremony, Hesse’s Minister of Economics Tarek Al-Wazir was among the 160 guests, and Federal Minister of Economics Peter Altmaier gave a video greeting. “With the new Gigafactory in Darmstadt, AKASOL AG is making a decisive contribution to CO2 reduction in public transportation and logistics,” said Altmaier. “Innovative enterprises like this one help us meet our ambitious climate goals – and they create added value and jobs i...

Hyundai and LG Energy to build Electric Vehicle battery factory in Indonesia

Hyundai Motor Group said on Thursday it will partner with LG Energy Solution to build an electric vehicle battery factory in Indonesia. The two South Korean companies signed a memorandum of understanding with the Indonesian government to establish a joint venture to manufacture battery cells. Under the agreement, Hyundai and LG Energy will invest a total of $1.1 billion to build a battery cell plant in Karawang, just east of Jakarta, with both companies holding 50% ownership. The Indonesian government has agreed to offer incentives and rewards to support the plant. "With this battery cell manufacturing venture, the group and LG Energy Solution are further strengthening a strategic partnership that started more than a decade ago," Hyundai said in a statement. "The new factory wil...

Norwegian Freyr considering to build battery plant in Finland

The Norwegian company Freyr is taking the first steps towards the construction of another battery cell factory. The next Factory could be in Finland. Freyr has signed two non-binding letters of intent with the Finnish Minerals Group and the Finnish city of Vaasa. The letter of intent with the city of Vaasa grants Freyr the exclusive right to a 90-hectare plot of land for the potential battery cell plant. More details, such as potential capacity, are to be determined in the further process. However, Freyr speaks of a planned production “on an industrial scale”. The Nordic region offers competitive advantages for sustainable, low-carbon battery cell production on a large scale through low-cost renewable energy, local supply of battery raw materials and a highly skilled workforce. “Dev...

Foxconn to build factories for EV in the USA and Thailand

Contract manufacturer Foxconn is planning to build factories for electric cars in the USA and Thailand in 2022. Production is scheduled to start in 2023. Plants could also follow in Europe. The company made the announcement in a conference call for investors. According to Foxconn CEO Liu Young-way, Hon Hai, as the company is actually called, is in talks about possible locations for plants in Europe. However, neither the regions in Europe under discussion nor the locations of the plants in the USA and Thailand were mentioned. Foxconn wants to build vehicles for Fisker in the US plant – both companies had announced a cooperation on the so-called ‘Project Pear’ in February, in the context of which a “new type of vehicle” is to be created. Production is to start here by the end of 2023....

Piedmont’s lithium deliveries to Tesla postponed indefinitely

Piedmont Lithium has indefinitely postponed the first deliveries of lithium chemicals to Tesla. Originally the deliveries were to begin between July 2022 and July 2023. Reuters writes (citing an unnamed Piedmont representative) that the decision was made by mutual agreement with Tesla. There is no new date or timeframe for the start of deliveries. Tesla has not yet responded to requests for comment. The contract, signed in September 2020, actually called for Piedmont to begin supplying Tesla sometime between July 2022 and July 2023. This was to be spodumene concentrate (SC6) from the Piedmont deposit in North Carolina. Tesla was to have received around 53,000 tonnes per year. The reason for the delayed delivery to Tesla is likely to be delays in the mining project itself. In July...

Tesla wants to limit battery variety

During Tesla’s conference call in the context of the latest quarterly figures, there were some interesting hints about the future direction of battery cells: Statements by Elon Musk indicate that Tesla wants to rely on only two different battery types in the future. At the moment Tesla uses several cell types. These are primarily round cells, in the 18650, 2170 and recently also 4680 format. However, there are still differences in the individual formats, for example, the Model 3 is available with round cells from Panasonic and those from LG Energy Solution Tesla's evolution In addition, there are the LFP cells from CATL for the standard range Model 3 from China, which are not round cells. In the meantime, this has meant that European buyers of a Model 3 Standard Range+ could eith...
