Spain to invest $5.1 bln in electric vehicle production

Spain will invest 4.3 billion euros ($5.1 billion) to kick-start the production of electric vehicles and batteries as part of a major national spending program financed mostly by European Union recovery funds. The Spanish government announced this on Monday. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said the government-run plan would include the whole production chain. The Government is planing to give grants to companies with the goal of building the country's first battery plant and boosting manufacturing of electric vehicles. "It is important for Spain to react and to anticipate this transformation in Europe's automotive sector," he said, adding the private sector could contribute a further 19.7 billion euros to the initiative from 2021 to 2023, according to government estimates. The two Swedish companies Volvo Car Group and Northvolt want to set up a 50:50 joint venture to develop and produce sustainable batteries. The main concern of the duo is the construction of a new battery cell factory in Europe with a potential capacity of up to 50 GWh per year. The joint venture of the two companies wants to start with the implementation of a research and development center in Sweden. This center is scheduled to go into operation in 2022. The center is to build on the battery know-how of both companies and "develop ultra-modern battery cells and next-generation vehicle integration technologies". The battery cell factory with up to 50 GWh is planned to open in 2026 and employ around 3,000 people. The location has not yet been determined but the products manufact...

Biden wants millions of electric vehicles in America but is the infrastructure ready?

If you have been following the news then you know that American President Joe Biden is a big supporter of more electric vehicles on the road. We agree with you there Mr President. We would love to see more EV on America's roads as well. But there is one big problem that the country is facing and it is outdated infrastructure. If you are living in California and Texas then you will still remember the recent power interruptions. This is a massive problem when it comes to EV adoption because if the grid is down we can't charge our electric cars. On top of that we see an increase of electric car sales which will put even more pressure on an outdated grid. The U.S. reached “the tipping point” this year, said Mary Barra, chairman and CEO of General Motors. Demand for battery-electric ve...
